Canada-Tohoku Reconstruction Project will
help Japan
The Government of Canada and the Government of the Province of British Columbia,
announced $4.5 million (CAD) for Japan to rebuild from unprecedented devastation
of the March 11th Great East Japan earthquake. Joe Oliver, Canada's Minister of
Natural Resources, Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural
Resources Operations for British Columbia and representatives from Canada's
forest industry, announced to offer their support on November 11,2011. The
Reconstruction Project will help Japan rebuild some of its public facilities
using wood and enable resident, including kindergartens, a nursing homes and
medical buildings except shops or office for commercial use. The Canada Wood
Group, a consortium of industry associations, is working with communities in the
Tohoku region to develop a shortlist of suitable projects towards a funding
decision in early 2012. Construction on the projects is expected in late 2012 or
by the end of March 2013 at the latest.
